En-suites that actually work
The mistake most homeowners make with en-suites is treating them like miniature bathrooms. They're not. A good en-suite is designed from scratch around the constraints of the space — and the constraints are usually quite different from a family bathroom.
You're typically working with less floor area, often a sloping ceiling (in lofts), and a soil stack that wasn't placed for the new room. Getting the design right means thinking about door swing, ventilation, the order of fixtures, lighting and even where you'll put a towel. We design each en-suite around how it will actually be used.
What we do
New en-suite installation
You have an existing en-suite space — perhaps tired, dated or simply not working anymore — and want it stripped back and rebuilt. This is the more straightforward of the two services: services are already in place, the room is the right shape, and we focus on layout, finish and product choice.
En-suite conversion
Creating an en-suite where one didn't exist before. Usually this means taking part of a bedroom or a redundant cupboard/wardrobe and converting it. This is more involved because we're routing new plumbing, often new waste runs, sometimes adding new ventilation, and managing the structural changes (a new internal wall, a new doorway, electrics in fresh locations).
Loft conversions and master bedroom suites in Bridgnorth are the most common scenarios. We've also done several conversions in older period homes where a redundant cupboard became the en-suite — usually a clever use of awkward space.
Common $Bridgnorth en-suite scenarios
- New build master en-suites. Often the en-suite was built to a price by the developer. A retrofit lifts the spec significantly — proper tiling, better brassware, often improved layout.
- Loft conversion en-suites. Compact spaces with sloping ceilings. We design around the headroom — basin under the slope, shower in the full-height area.
- Period property conversions. Often using a small back bedroom or dressing area. Soil stack routing is the biggest design challenge.
- Guest en-suites. Used less often, so they reward thoughtful design — a touch of luxury without overspending on traffic-heavy fittings.
Design considerations we work through with you
Layout
The order of WC, basin and shower around the perimeter of the room — and which one sits on which wall — affects how the room feels far more than the fixtures themselves. Get the layout right and a small en-suite feels generous. Get it wrong and a larger one feels cramped.
Shower vs wet room
For tight spaces, a level-access wet zone often gives more usable room than a tray-and-enclosure shower. We discuss this at the site visit. Read our wet room vs shower enclosure piece for the trade-offs.
Soil pipe and waste runs
The further a WC is from the soil stack, the more gradient you need on the waste run — typically 1:40. In some en-suite conversions, that's not achievable with a standard waste pipe, and a macerator (Saniflo-type) becomes the answer. We use these where appropriate but always prefer a gravity waste where the layout allows.
Ventilation
Mandatory in any new bathroom — Building Regulations Part F. For en-suites without an external wall, that means routed ducting to an external outlet, usually through the ceiling void. We design this in from day one.
Storage
Easy to overlook, frustrating to live without. We often build in a small recessed shelf in the shower wall (a niche) and a vanity basin with under-counter storage — small details, big impact.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does an en-suite cost to fit in Bridgnorth?
En-suites in Bridgnorth typically range from £4,000 to £8,500 fully fitted. Conversions (adding a brand new en-suite where one didn't exist) cost more because of additional plumbing, waste connections, and often electrical/ventilation work. We provide itemised written quotes after a site visit.
How small can an en-suite be?
Practically, an en-suite needs about 0.8m × 1.7m as an absolute minimum to fit a small WC, basin and shower. Realistically, 1.5m × 2m gives a comfortable usable space. Smaller than that and you start compromising on either the WC, basin or shower size.
Can I convert part of a bedroom into an en-suite?
In most cases, yes. The main constraints are: floor area (does the remaining bedroom still work?), waste pipe routing to the soil stack, and ventilation. A site visit lets us tell you exactly what's achievable.
Do I need planning permission?
Generally no for an internal en-suite conversion in a standard home. Building Regulations apply — we handle that. Listed buildings and conservation areas around Bridgnorth can need consent for external changes like a new soil vent. We flag anything that might apply.
How long does fitting an en-suite take?
A new en-suite installation takes 7–10 working days for a typical compact space. A conversion (creating an en-suite from scratch) usually takes 10–14 working days because of the additional structural and plumbing work.
